Choosing a ceiling finish

Smooth, knockdown, or orange peel? Start with the look you like and the ceiling you have.

A Chamos Texturing planning guide · Updated

Start with the room

Think about the room as a whole. The ceiling shares the space with natural light, windows, walls, and fixtures. Collect examples that show the entire room as well as close-up texture.

Compare the options

A smooth finish has an understated appearance. Knockdown adds a softly flattened pattern. Orange peel has a finer, lightly pebbled texture. The preparation and finishing requirements can differ.

Look at the starting surface

Existing coatings, repairs, seams, and the original texture affect the work. Discuss whether a local change or a full-ceiling finish will produce the more consistent result.

Make the scope clear

Ask which preparation, priming, texture, and painting stages are included. Agree on the desired result before the project begins.
